On February 19, 2016, a remarkable group of world-renowned experts and thought-leaders in adult and pediatric spine surgery came to NewYork-Presbyterian for the inaugural Safety in Spine Surgery Summit led by Michael G. Vitale, MD, MPH.

In a recent article in Becker's Spine Review highlighting key take-aways from the summit, Dr. Vitale, Chief of Pediatric Spine and Scoliosis Service at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, says, "The healthcare system we practice in can be a challenge and we can use formal tools and quality science to optimize the environment in healthcare and make errors even more rare. The biggest changes have come from looking at the episode of care rather than the surgical treatment. That means developing formal ways to assess risk before surgery and using a multidisciplinary team to ensure indications are appropriate and we are choosing the best treatment possible for any given patient."
