We are at a moment in time where we have an opportunity to bring people together with thoughtful and inclusive discussion that can bring about meaningful change. I look forward to serving in a role that allows this discussion to develop the tools for colleagues to enact change, create a more inclusive community, and improve the lives of patients.

A message from William N. Levine, MD, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is committed to providing outstanding care to all. As a global leader in the orthopedic community, our department remains steadfast in its promotion of racial and social justice within every facet of our workplace – our research laboratories, educational programs, and in the care of our patients.

Of course, more can and must be done in this cause, and so I am proud to announce that Dr. Wakenda K. Tyler has been named Vice-Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University. In her new role, Dr. Tyler will lead our efforts toward advancing a more just and inclusive future.

Please join me and Dr. Tyler as Columbia Orthopedics focuses fiercely on creating opportunities for historically marginalized groups and expands diversity within our department and to the national orthopedic community.
