New Research from Dr. Christopher Ahmad Finds Predraft Baseball Players May Improve Performance Post-UCL Reconstruction

Columbia Orthopedics Chief of Sports Medicine, Vice Chair of Research, and New York Yankees Head Team Physician, Christopher S. Ahmad, MD, was published in the latest issue of American Journal of Sports Medicine for a study he co-authored “Effect of Predraft Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction on Future Performance in Professional Baseball: A Matched Cohort Comparison.”

345 pitchers were analyzed for the study to see if UCL reconstruction in amateur baseball players predicted future success in the MLB. The study concluded that “Professional pitchers who underwent UCL reconstruction as amateurs appear to perform at least as well as, if not better than, matched controls without elbow surgery.”
