About Our Services

Orthopedic Oncology

Our Mission

Children and adults with bone and soft tissue diseases require comprehensive, personalized healthcare for the diagnosis and treatment of their complex disorders. We are specialists in treating pediatric and adult patients with both primary bone and soft tissue tumors that begin within the musculoskeletal system, and secondary or metastatic cancers which spread to the musculoskeletal system from other areas of the body.

Our extraordinary orthopedic oncology care is built on an interdisciplinary team of dedicated specialists who oversee every aspect of each patient’s care — from the first symptoms through all stages of treatment and rehabilitation.

Expert Care

The role of orthopedic oncology in primary bone and soft tissue tumors is surgical removal of the tumor with an appropriate margin to prevent recurrence. With malignant bone sarcomas, the goal is to save the affected limb and provide reconstructive options to preserve function, including techniques such as bone allografts, allograft-prosthetic composites, megaprosthesis, growing prosthesis in children, and rotationplasty. Reconstructive techniques are individualized to the patient and utilize advanced technologies and techniques.

Secondary or metastatic cancer occurs when tumor cells travel from their site of origin to bone. Common sites of origin include the prostate, breast, thyroid, lung, and kidney. Cancer in bone can lead to fracture or place the patient at risk of fracture. At times, surgical intervention is necessary to treat pain and/or prevent fracture.

Care for all of these conditions takes place in collaboration with the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. This approach allows our service to offer an unmatched level of personalized care from diagnosis to recovery from a variety of specialists managing every aspect of your care, including:

  • Advanced diagnostic imaging
